Percussion post driver

The percussion post driver is a hydraulic tool, commonly used in vineyards, which quickly and accurately drives wooden or metal stakes using a striking system similar to a jackhammer.
It can be mounted on various supports, such as inter-row tractors, high-clearance tractors, mini-excavators or front loaders. This hydraulic system ensures high efficiency (around 1000 blows per minute) and does not require a clamp, as the bell holds the post.
The tilt and offset of the tool are hydraulically adjustable for greater precision and safety, particularly on difficult terrain.

This post driver is hydraulic and mounted on various supports. Either on a chassis with a 3-point linkage for inter-row tractors, or on a bracket for attachment to a high-clearance tractor, or on a mini-excavator, or on a front loader for use in large-scale cultivation/farming.

This is the tool most commonly used in vineyards. It can be attached to the front or rear of an inter-row tractor, and only to the front of a high-clearance tractor. The tractor's hydraulic system or an external power unit can drive all types of stakes (wood, iron) quickly and accurately like a jackhammer.
Mounted on a mini-excavator, it can be used to access difficult areas (slopes) and narrow spaces with great driving precision. The mini excavator's tracks are an undeniable asset when it comes to preventing soil compaction, particularly in situations where the ground has not re-solidified, as is often the case in winter. These models keep costs down, thanks in particular to the compactness of the tool.

Component parts

Drive for the driving part

Two drives are available.
  • either via the tractor's hydraulic pump,
  • or by the power take-off (540 rpm), which drives a hydraulic power unit to ensure a constant flow rate for driving the posts. These percussion tools require a higher flow of oil than mat-type post drivers.

The bell

The posts are driven by a bell which strikes the post like a jackhammer. These tools are faster (around 1,000 blows/min) and more precise than post drivers with a sledgehammer. They are highly effective and do not require a post driver, as the bell holds the post in place.

When driving metal posts, it is essential to use and place a martyr (or borrow) between the bell and the post in order to maintain the integrity of the iron post.

Use and settings

Tilt

The mast is hydraulically tilted, allowing the plumbness of the mast to be adjusted when the post is being driven.

Offset

The tool is hydraulically offset to one side. This adjustment allows the tractor to be offset from the row of vines at the start of the driving operation to maintain a suitable working distance. It can also be increased or decreased depending on the condition of the plot (slope, for example) for greater safety and stability.

Rotation

As an option, some models can be rotated to work on two rows at a time per pass.

Safety

The hammer slides on a slide and engages the bell only when it comes into contact with the post. The risk of accident is therefore limited, unlike with a mast post driver. The adjustment control box is located either directly in the cab or at the rear of the tool frame.
